Its always tricky doing really long takes with lots of choreography and rehearsals. While many people are in awe (along with me) about the poor camera guy you must not forget the silent ninja, the boom operator.
Long takes require lots of concentration from overhead objects and sometimes many people all moving about.
This long takes segment is from the movie Hugo for the final scene of the film. There are 2 boom operators involved and one of them is behind the camera at all times. Usually only main cast would be radio miked for actual dialogue and so the boom operator is vital in getting across the party atmosphere along with the context to main characters dialogue. long takes definitely take there toll on your arms. Even with a carbon fibre boom.
