Why is the Sound Devices 302 not dead yet?

Seems very strange that with the success of the MixPre-3 and the MixPre-6 that Sound Devices haven’t killed off the 302. The fact you can order a MixPre-3 for ~£675 or order a new Sound Devices 302 for ~£1,824. The former with recording functionality and just as many inputs and outputs with even quieter preamps at that.

Let me know in the comments what you think.

302 has transformer balanced inputs and XLR outputs which the MixPre 3/6 don’t have. It’s designed for use with traditional style pro cameras with XLR inputs. The MixPres are targeted towards DSLRs. There’s probably still some market for the 302, possibly ENG users that don’t need the recording functionality of the 633. It’s also worth noting that the 302 is analogue whereas the MixPres are digital so will introduce a small delay from input to output.
