Why you should have a Boom Operator…

The Job of a Boom Operator is microphone placement of a shotgun, hypercardioid or other microphone type which is attached to a Boom Pole and extended to usually be above the frame of the shot to capture the best possible dialogue. They are also in charge of radio mic placement which are usually disgusted with the Production Sound Mixer.

I love booming and tickling the safety lines on the frame to get as close and clear as possible, especially for those intimate shots. The Role of boom op in camera terms is the focus puller and 1st AC and 95% of productions need one or more to achieve professional broadcast quality sound where a production mix is important.

Your Production sound mixer will be focusing purely on the sound of all the booms and radio mics to ensure plenty of usable coverage is captured for each scene and gives post production flexibility to work there magic.
