What does sound mean?
Sound is vibrations in the air that are translated into electrical impulses in your brains via our ears. Sound needs a medium to travel in like air or wood. If there is nothing to essentially conduct the vibrations then there will be no sound because it can't reach our ears through vibrations in the air or by the ground through our bodies to vibrate our bones in our ears, triggering impulses that are felt and heard.
What does sound mean in terms of quality?
Sound also refers to useable bits of a sonic sound scape. For instance, a scene where a person is talking to someone. This is different to noise which would be a lawn mower beside them that is running idle. The noise is then effecting the sound of the dialogue rendering it inaudible.
