RED DSMC2 Camera Connections - WEAPON | MONSTRO | HELIUM | GEMINI

RED DSMC2 Camera Connections - WEAPON | MONSTRO | HELIUM | GEMINI

The DSMC2 BRAIN has several iterations and names. So if your camera guy or gal gives you these names than I'll explain the options and accessories it may or may not come with.

- MONSTRO (8K VV)
- SCARLET-W RED DRAGON 5K BRAIN (also W = WEAPON)
- SCARLET-W
- EPIC-W
- HELIUM (8K S35)
- HELIUM (8K S35 MONOCHROME)
- GEMINI (5K S35)

FUN FACT: I think because of the legacy cameras of the RED EPIC and RED SCARLET a lot of camera ops confuse or mix up names. Sometimes they will say RED EPIC which actually means the Weapon sensor BRAIN. So do check and if in doubt ask if it's a weapon or an older model.

What The BRAIN Covers

The BRAIN aspect of the RED is the body without any of the attachments. There are some basic functions in regards to audio that every one of the above models has: Built In Microphones

The BRAIN has integrated dual channel digital stereo microphones, uncompressed, 24-bit 48 kHz. This is without any additional modules added. This means you can get a scratch track out of any RED.

DSMC2 EXPANDER Capabilities

There is no timecode input from the BRAIN itself you need one of the following modules to be attached. The modules are also coded with the name DSMC2 so you know it will work with the cameras above:

DSMC2 JETPACK-SDI EXPANDER

DSMC2 JETPACK-SDI EXPANDER

This expander has the least capabilities of all the other expanders for the DSMC2 cameras. It only adds a Timecode SYNC port (Genlock IN / Timecode IN / Sync IN) (4-Pin 00B LEMO socket) Note this doesn't let you take timecode from the camera.

DSMC2 V-LOCK I/O EXPANDER / BASE EXPANDER

DSMC2 V-LOCK I/O EXPANDER

Note: There is a V-LOCK and NON V-LOCK Version. The NON V-Lock Version is referred to as the BASE Expander.

This module gives you the additional capabilities of:

- CTRL & SYNC ports (2x 00B LEMO 4-Pin, Timecode and Genlock support)
- Stereo Headphone output (3.5 mm jack)
- Stereo Analog input (3.5 mm jack)

The analog input from the 3.5mm is 24-bit, 48 KHz, uncompressed, unbalanced mic level. I have found when sending out from a mixer through an A-Box XLR adapter you need to set your output levels to consumer line level which is -10 on the Sound Devices 688.

DSMC2 REDVOLT EXPANDER

DSMC2 REDVOLT EXPANDER

This is a beast of an adapter for the RED with the most additional capabilities:

- Timecode is 5pin Lemo IN/OUT
- Genlock is BNC
- 2x 3pin XLRS for audio with Line / Mic / Phantom Power Mic Levels
- Headphone port (Stereo 3.5mm jack)
